Special education has a long tradition at the institute. It began as early as 1972, initially aimed at older students, and from 1974 onward the focus shifted to children. Many students from the special education program have gone on to study at higher education institutions in the field or moved directly into professional careers. Teaching is class-based and follows the most extensive syllabus of basic dance education, providing readiness for professional further studies.<\/p>\n
During the first six years, the main dance-technical subject is classical ballet, with contemporary dance as a complementary major. The number of weekly classes increases each year.<\/p>\n
In addition, the training includes other dance techniques such as tap dance, character dance, body maintenance, supporting theoretical studies, and, as an essential component, performance training. Summer camps feature visiting teachers from both Finland and abroad, and the program also includes numerous performances at various dance events.<\/p>\n
